Well I can send you my single copybook, which does this, as outlined above.
Would that help? Not *much* better than a subroutine, but it does
encapsulate things, so you don't need all those global variables and API
definitions etc. I have an equivalent copybook to receive messages and also
one to clear the message queue (useful to call immediately after an EXFMT).
