Is there an easy way to do this?

Probably, but it would help to know about more about the format of the date. Is it YYYYMM.DD, or is it some sort of epoch date?

On the other hand, why not use some SQL like the TIMESTAMPDIFF function you were asking about on Midrange-L the other day? You should be able to adapt that solution to this problem fairly easily.
