Rob, I'm pretty sure there was a day when YOU stored dates in numeric fields - maybe even 7,0 with a century.
The only thing I find puzzling is the use of a field with decimal places. Storing dates in 8,0 fields is straightforward enough, and all you really lose is the ability to do date arithmetic.
