Thanks all. Barbara's code did the trick.

If does lead me to another question on %trim, %trimr. If you know
for sure the field is left justified and you want to trim off
trailing blanks, is using %trimr more efficient than %trim? They
would both have the same results. I tend to always user %trim for

blanks an nulls like 'a.b.c.dn nn n ', the result of the second %trimr
of parameter would be 'a.b.c.d'. (where n = null)
