Subject: RE: SMTP server name
because I just tried to PING yahoo.com (from a command line) andcouldn't.
That means my iSeries can't talk directly to the web, right?
Be careful w/ping. If you can ping, it's a good indication that
the connection is valid (obviously), but if the ping is
unsuccessful that doesn't mean the connection is bad. Many sites
(try cnn.com) drop the ICMP packets needed for ping to work on
the floor, so the lack of a ping resonse isn't always an
indication that the connection is off.
As for the SMTP server, a good "default" would be localhost, as
it will work, I'd guess, 70% of the time. Also, make sure that
whatever server you use, the server is configured to allow
relaying as you'll be asking it to deliver messages for users
that aren't local to it. There's nothing wrong with allowing
relay, so long as it's not open-relay on the 'net. :)
