Alan,

The subfields of a data structure defined as follows:

D PFX E DS Extname(Filename)
D QUALIFIED

are referred to as PFX.FLD1, PFX.FLD2, PFX.FLD3, etc.
(where the fields in Filename are named as FLD1, FLD2, FLD3, etc.)

Sorry - I'm getting all flummoxed
Let me re-write that
I understand that the field names P99filename1 etc NEVER had
data placed in
them, hence the "empty" output file.
What I really mean is that the field names that I had in the program
P99.fieldname1 etc were NOT really defined anywhere.
Why did it compile? Why was I able to EVAL them in debug?
