Jim,

I think it's a matter of preference since either will work, but I personally use the record format for anything record related, i.e. chain, read, write, update (for which of course, write and update it's required), and the file name for file operations, i.e. open, close, status, error, eof, etc. As a standard practice, we also name our record formats with the file name, for example, FILEA has a record format of F_FILEA. Unless the record format is renamed in the program, we can usually tell at a glance which file is being addressed.

Subject: read/chain record format or file name?

When performing a Read or Chain operation, is best practices to reference
the record format name or the file name? Why?

I know what I do. I have seen commercial software do both. I have seen
individual programmers do both.

The reason I pose the question is I am teaching a class in RPG (/free, if
you care) at a community college this semester and prefer to teach best
practices from the start.

Your thoughts?

TIA

Thank you,
- Jim
