Read from a file, and write to the record.

I got taught that in RPGII, 25 years ago.

It is much easier to read. We use MAPICS here and the record format name
means diddly. Actually most of the file names don't mean anything either,
for that matter.

But, if you are reading from a multiple record format file, use the record
format. Or, ignore the other formats if you are not using them. Then you
can still read from the file name.

Thanx,

Nick

Subject
read/chain record format or file name?

When performing a Read or Chain operation, is best practices to reference
the record format name or the file name? Why?

I know what I do. I have seen commercial software do both. I have seen
individual programmers do both.

The reason I pose the question is I am teaching a class in RPG (/free, if
you care) at a community college this semester and prefer to teach best
practices from the start.

Your thoughts?

TIA

Thank you,
- Jim
