My RPG programmers always define their date fields as date and that has

I did not know there was a solution but I do know that ILE COBOL does
not appear to handle these natively.

Anyway - methinks your ILE COBOL programmers need a little education. The ILE COBOL support is not quite as elegant as RPG IV's but is actually better that the original RPG IV support since it allows among other things, the subtraction of a number of days, months and years from a dat all in one operation. Until V5 RPG IV required three operations to do this.

ILE COBOL can do this to determine the number of days between two dates:

COMPUTE Duration =
FUNCTION FIND-DURATION (W-date1 W-date2 days).
