I can't think of another reason to use decimal 8. I'd agree with Walden
that best practise is to use NULL for "not filled in", but I don't have
any experience with it. The downside to that approach is that it
doesn't seem to be very "RPGish". FWIW, using date-types and *LOVAL as
a "not-entered" value works well enough for us.
