I didn't find that information... it's just what I remember. In fact, I may be completely wrong.

In general, I've had a really tough time on the iSeries getting actual hex dumps of my data. It always wants to translate it for me to some other format, which is often a useful feature, but there are times (particularly when debugging software) where knowing the precise binary values is useful -- and that's often tricky to get.

Frequently I end up transferring the file I'm working on to a FreeBSD box using FTP in BINARY mode. That way I know it's unchanged, and I can use FreeBSD "od" tool to examine it.

In response to Jerry's question, I experimented quickly looking for a tool that would work nicely without the transfer (since I didn't want to suggest that Jerry use FreeBSD) and the "od" in QShell seemed to work.
