Eons ago (and I forget what programming language it was), every time you
used a variable, it would add it to the literal pool without checking if
one was already there. Thus the variable pool could get quite large. I
doubt that situation exists today. As has been noted, it's a matter of
clarity and organization.

Because it makes your code look more like COBOL and it's definition
section and isn't that what we should all be striving for? (ducking and
