Whoa. Barbara, so this means I can add all the parameters I want to
my heart's content to the already previously existing procedures in
a service program without messing things up at the signature level?
(In my case I name the signatures myself).
Also, one still needs to create a new signature for the new
program(s) that actually use the new parameter, don't they? (Even if
they use "arbitrary" signatures such as I do, I don't like letting
the binder do it).
If you define signature values yourself, you never really _have_ to define
a new signature, but it might be a really good idea in some situations.
Changing the signature is probably a good idea if you know that you've
changed the contents of the *SRVPGM radically enough that it would be bad
for any program to call the *SRVPGM without having recompiled.
I think there's quite a bit of confusion out there about this. For anyone
who goes to a conference where Jon Paris or Susan Gantner are presenting
their ILE presentations, I'd highly recommend them. In the case of your
questions specifically, the one you'd be particularly interested in is
called "ILE Essentials, Part 2: Binder Language & Activation Groups". I
attended this session recently and it certainly cleared up some
misconceptions I had.
HTH,
Adam
