To further add to what Rob has said. What difference does it matter if
it's the cycle or sql if the next person in line to have a go at the
program doesn't understand the full function of RPG? Let's say he used
SQL, and the next programmer has no experience in SQL. Wouldn't that
waste just as much time as an SQL savy person who has no clue about the
cycle trying to modify a cycle program? I don't think that's a failure of
the program that is written as much as it is the failure of the programmer
who has come in not knowing the full concepts of RPG. When I started my
first job programming 10 years ago (... wow has it been a decade already)
I had no clue about the cycle. The senior programmer in the place I
worked wouldn't let me touch anything until I learned it. If you can't
figure out the cycle, then pass the program to someone that can figure it
out, or learn it so next time you know about it. It amazes me sometimes
the lack of gumption to learn something new. Even if you don't like it,
you should learn it in case you have to work with it.
Of course, this is coming from a guy that thinks you shouldn't be able to
drive a car until you've learned how it works and have some clue of what's
wrong when it breaks down. And I won't go into what I think of roadside
assistance for putting on a spare tire.
