But today,
RPG has advanced so far, it really makes you wonder if teaching the cycle is
a necessity. Yes, you can accomplish things with a bit less code, but
nowadays, what are we really eliminating?

Hands up anyone who works on legacy programs!!! Having, not so long ago, worked
at a company where about 40% of the system was written in RPGII knowing the
cycle was useful. The current job I have most of the programs were written
about 15 years or more ago and have barely been touched since.

I do not think it hurts to know a little historical stuff about what you use
today, we cannot all be lucky enough to work at a place where every program was
written in the last 6 months.
