I remember a guy once that used an rpg pgm to put a screen up that consisted
of reverse image blanks. He then used a light sensor to turn on a plug. He
then automated the process with the job scheduler to run the process at 6:00
AM. He then plugged his coffee maker into the outlet and used the process to
make coffee automatically. Worked like a charm. This was obviously prior
automatic coffee pots.

 I first wish to thank everyone that helped me with "I need faster SQL".
The issue is still not resolved, but I feel that I cannot go further
without getting my SQL Performance Monitor working.  I am working with
IBM to straighten that out.  

I have a new issue.  I am building an application that evaluates a
number of conditions and if at the end there is a condition of
sufficient severity an engineering manager must deal with the situation.
Currently the technician that is running the tests turns on a flashing
light if the condition is serious and a manager must deal with the
situation and then travel some distance to turn off the light.  I would
like to automate the light process.  How can I turn a light on and off
from the iSeries based on a condition?

What hardware would I need?  Simple is best.

I may need to determine if the light is already on or off before I act.
Depends on if I can simply send an explicit on or off to the device.

Frankly, if someone I worked with tried the "I bet you can't figure
