No, IBM stores date fields as 4-byte binary numbers. However, you are allowed to specify the format returned to someone reading the file. This is the DATFMT keyword on the field definition. During a read, as the OS is filling the buffer with the data from the file, it converts from the 4-byte binary value to whatever format you specified in the field definition. Joe
