The last time I used a *DTADCT on the iSeries was when working in S/36 mode 
(that was a quick in/out and run gig). It basically allows you to define 
fields for s/36 flat (program described) files so that you can then use 
things like query/dfu etc. to access the data as fields instead of one large 
field. I can't remember well, but you may even be able to use the data 
dictionary to cause the compiler to treat the file as externally described, 
but can't be sure of that. 

A *DTADCT, while conceptually similar to, is not the same as a field 
reference file by any means. A *DTADCT causes the system to present the flat 
file as a file with fields. 

At least that's my recollection...
