If you are talking to someone foreign to the iSeries then you might explain it to them in this fashion. What one might call a "Field reference file" in DDS you can call it your data dictionary. Here's a sample: CREATE TABLE FREF (ITEMNBR CHAR (27 ) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT, DESCRIP CHAR (50 ) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT, QUANTITY DEC (9 , 2) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT) Then when you create a new table you can reference it like: create table itemmast as (select itemnbr, descrip as itemdesc, quantity as onhand, quantity as onorder from fref) with no data Rob Berendt
