hi paul, the RPG manual says in the section about figurative constants, that there is something like: *ALLX'x1..' Character fields: The hexadecimal literal X'x1..' is cyclically repeated to a length equal to the associated field. So i'd try: move *ALLX'00' alfa4k I didn't try it, but it should work. - Martin ------------------ We have a file which is 4000 bytes long and contains just one field (X(4000)). I would appreciate any suggestions for how to place null characters (Hex '00') in all the unused bytes after the data. Ideally in RPG but Cobol would be ok.
