I agree - but the constant and *IN(constantname) solution is something that you can get people to add to their code as and when indicator function is discovered. Your method - while better - involves mapping the indicator structure etc. Some folks won't take that trouble - so I take a pragmatic approach that makes it hard for them to come up with an excuse for not doing it!
