Hmm. Doesn't that amount to treating the file as program-described? Indeed, according to the manual, you can only do this if the file is declared as program-described.
Hmm. Here's an idea: What if I treat the file as program-described, but chain it into (and update it from) a DS that's defined using an EXTNAME clause from the file in question?
The only thing with this is that if I treat the file as program-described, and the structure changes in such a way as to change the buffer length, or the positions of fields that are of interest to the program, there wouldn't be any level-check errors to tell us anything happened to the file format.
