I'm sorry to say that I can't help you with your decision about HWPF.  My 
concern was that the entire POI project had halted development (even 
though this seemed quite unlikely to me).  I have had opportunity to use 
any of the POI software as of yet, but I expect to use the HSSF 
functionality in the foreseeable future.
