It doesnt' need to know what is in the string, it just needs to pass it
to other programss. But surely the other programs will have to know the length? So why worry about having to change just one program when others will have to change anyway? I would tend to define it in the current caller as being of the maximum length it is ever likely to be and pass that. It has no impact on your call speed etc. since you're only passing a pointer anyway. That way you don't have to recompile it and you're not taking any risks. Jon Paris Partner400 www.Partner400.com
