Yes and no. I think this list and the books serve different purposes. You can't learn RPG from the ground up using this list! Learning from the ground up requires a LOT of very basic material to be explained in the proper sequence, and that's not practical on a mailing list.
This list is wonderful for filling in gaps in your knowledge, or picking up some quick tips, but first you have to be at a level where you need those tips, or have noticed the gaps.
I somehow doubt that the gurus on this list will take the time to teach you RPG from the ground up on the mailing list. I know I wouldn't.
