He was saying that he created a second logical to read from that is INPUT only, so that when the record is read it won't be locked. That's the only reason he created the second logical. So our suggestions were for him to not deal with the second logical and just use the extender (N) on the first logical to load the subfile so that the records are not locked when read. Creating the new logical allowed him to have two logicals in the program, one for input and the other for update. The original email indicated that he created a new logic with same key to avoid record lock. If the problem Ken is encountering is what your are describing, how would creating a new logic correct the problem? -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Michael_Schutte@xxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, May 12, 2006 3:00 PM To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: RE: reads and updates on the same file Lim, if you are reading an update-able file to load the subfile, the last record read will be locked unless you use the (N) extender. That record will remain locked until UNLOCK?, UPDATE, DELETE, or another read is performed. The issue that this causes is when a second person calls the program up. The second person will not be able to load their subfile because the READ is trying to gain an exclusive lock on a record that is already locked. It's my opinion that you should always load subfiles with the (N) extender. Are you actually having record lock problem? -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ken Kerata Sent: Friday, May 12, 2006 2:22 PM To: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: reads and updates on the same file This program displays a subfile of all records in the file and later updates individual records. To avoid record locks, I created a new logical file with the same key as the originals. Is there a more elegant solution, which avoids creating a second logical? This is my first posting, so I would appreciate any advice.
