Scott, Thanks for that. I think the problem I had was that I was putting my 1-byte unsigned integers back together into an int and not an unsigned int - causing signing problems. That then precipitated a mad scramble through google which yielded an incorrect assumption that the "leftmost bit" was the leftmost bit in the integer and not the leftmost bit in the most significant byte. Thanks for the clarification. Your flipInt solution is much neater and faster than the one I had half-built (half-baked) - I'll certainly use that. Bob, An actual real-world use for eval-corr!
