<Snip> Wow, did I just stand on both sides of the fence? :-)

Did you happen to notice on which side the grass was greener? ;-)

I see two approaches to this.

IBM is trying to get people to develop using the new compilers which is
great!

The other is that IBM is mandating that people switch to a newer version "or
else!". If code is working and all it needs is maintenance why would
somebody want to be forced to a new compiler? Some might say that those old
compilers are incredibly ancient in practicality, but guess what they are
going to be saying about RPGILE V5R4 in 10 years!?

With that said I am glad they are taking it away in some part because now
they won't have to support it which will hopefully leave more time for new
features in the latest compiler versions. But it just smells of Microsoft
thinking. Know what I mean?

Wow, did I just stand on both sides of the fence? :-)

I wonder if we are entering an age where compiler writing will be
revolutionized so we no longer have this problem. Much like how SOA's are
trying to revolutionize connecting disparate systems (even though there are
many iterations of that to come I am sure).

Thoughts?

Check out the article at
http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh020606-story02.html

Quoting from the article:
"First up, IBM says that WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries V5R4 will
be the last release to ship with RPG II and COBOL compilers that are
compatible with the System/36 and RPG III and COBOL compilers that are
compatible with the System/38. IBM is recommending that customers who have
deployed System/36 and System/38 applications in the S36EE or S38EE
emulation environments to switch to ILE RPG and get it over with. IBM did
say that these old compilers would be available as a non-warranted PRPQ in
the next release of i5/OS, but this is not a place you want to go."

I assume that means that source types CBL36, CBL38, RPG36 and RPG38 will no
longer compile. What about RPG? That would be nice also. Something to
force the major vendors to revamp to RPGLE.

In order to give people more time to prepare IBM really needs to put this at
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/iseries/planning/upgrade/futur
esftwr.html

The words already out, so it's not like putting the information there will
steal the thunder from the many nice enhancements in V5R4.
