This kind of cleanup stuff is why many people (for repetitive Java tasks) 
fire up a separate job for the java and instead of multiple calls to the 
java from the rpg, have the rpg put something on a data queue and have the 
Java program read the data queue.

I read about this in an article in the July/August 2005 edition of iSeries 
400 Experts Journal (Volume 8, Number 4).  "Using Java to access Microsoft 
SQL Server from RPG" by Craig Pelkie.  Code samples included.  Alas, it is 
a login required website.
