Really I don't see the problem.  Prompt them for a 3 positions and go from 
there, unless your question is how do you do this on the screen
Enter in item number . . :  ooooooooobbbooo
where ooo... is output only and bbb is input/output.  Then you are in a 
pickle.  Because, yes, you do have to make this three fields and I believe 
a space is needed between the fields.  But you're talking to someone who's 
done 1 screen in several years.  A real propeller head might be able to 
use some dynamic screen api or some such thing to do it an alternative way 
- I don't know.
