I've had clients who made odd demands similar to this. In three different circumstances, I told the client up front that costs would be higher doing it one way than it would be doing it another. The really odd part was the one client who chose the more expensive alternative. In the other two cases, the alternatives were technical, e.g., choosing to create a set of functions in COBOL or RPG where one was clearly a better choice for the type of work to be done. But the third client... the higher rate was simply for always wearing a suit while on site rather than casual clothes. It certainly gets interesting when you explain cost differences and let the client choose. If you tell the client that e-mail address validation can be done easily in RPG IV but take five or ten times as long for a less reliable set of code in RPG III, and the client chooses to pay the premium, well, you've done your ethical duty. Tell them in writing so there's a record. Tom Liotta
