why can't I add a subfield to likerec

I'm not able to do this:
 * QMHLJOBL api message selection information          
D msi             ds                  likerec(QMHT0100)
D  QMHIFR00                     10i 0                  
D  QMHCMQ00                      1                     

 
but I'm able to do this
D msi           E ds  
D  QMHIFR00                     10i 0                  
D  QMHCMQ00                      1                     

 
am I doing something wrong or that is the way it work.
