Can anyone fill me in on what will be required for this in regards to
hardware (modems, TCP/IP connection) and software (program to retrieve and
send info to mailboxes).

There are lots of different ways to retrieve EDI information. Are you using a VAN? Or direct to the trading partner? or AS1? or AS2? Or FTP?

Depending on the method, you'll need to write a communications program that uses either a modem or a TCP connection to download the data. Make sure you make it modular, because every trading partner or VAN is different. FTP has never been an official way of doing EDI, but it's commonly used anyway. It's not standardized, and each vendor has it's own modifications to the FTP protocol to make it work for EDI.
Only AS1 and AS2 are standardized.
