Kewl, thanks. I'll be sure to RTFM before bugging you all again now that
I actually know where to go to get the manual. Thanks.

AW: Embedded SQL in RPGLE pgm

Just Check the SQLCOD or SQLSTT after each statement.
To find the error message, combine 'SQL' and the absolute value
of the negative SQLCOD to a message-id, i.e. -204 = 'SQL0204'.
Then use WRKMSGF and the message file QSQLMSG to find the message text.

By the way USING is wrong in the execute statement.
You have to use USING if you specify parameter markers (?)
in your text string and want to replace them by values stored in
variables.

For more information about embedded SQL look at the following redbook,
I think it covers almost everything you have to know for embedded SQL.

Ok, what I have is this now:
updateStatemnt = 'UPDATE WPUSCHEDLE SET '
                          + %Trim(ctrName) + '='
                          + %Char(retField) + ', '
                          + %Trim(numName) + '='
                          + %Char(retField) + ' WHERE ('
                          + %Trim(dateName) + '='
                          + %Char(inPickupDate) + ') AND (WPUAREA='''
                          + Wcgararea + ''')';
      /End-Free
     C/Exec Sql
     C+ PREPARE mainUpdate From :updateStatemnt
     C/End-Exec
     C/Exec Sql
     C+ EXECUTE mainUpdate Using :updateStatemnt
     C/End-Exec

but it doesn't seem to be working. What am I missing?

After the PREPARE, use EXECUTE as follows:
C/Exec SQL EXECUTE mainSelect using :mainStatement

If you want to update the file, change "Select * from" to "Update" and add
the appropriate SET clauses.

Hope that helps.

     * Prepare Select Statement
     C/Exec Sql
     C+ Prepare mainSelect From :mainStatement
     C/End-Exec

So I'd just build my updateStatement and how would the C/ and C+
statements
work?
