Malchow, Did you try CpyToCSV CL command in RPG xTools? It works faster than CPYTOIMPF and does the other things you need. -Bob Cozzi www.RPGxTools.com If everything is under control, you are going too slow. - Mario Andretti -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Malchow, Grizzly Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2005 8:26 AM To: rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Working with IFS Files RE: Working with IFS Files > Is there a particular reason you aren't using RPG's extensive > capabilities for working with database files instead of trying to use > APIs intended for stream files? Scott, Thanks for the feedback. In response to your question, there are several reasons. The first, and probably the most evident reason, is I need a better understanding of working with the IFS. The second reason is I have a utility that uses CPYTOIMPF to copy a PF to a .csv file. It works pretty well except when the records in the file contain quotation marks and commas. I'm sure you know that results in a field being ended to early or essentially splitting a field up. I'm working on something that will handle these characters when they are encountered. Basically "prepare" the file before running the CPYTOIMPF command. I figured using IFS files would be more dynamic than using RPG's regular capabilities. I could just pass the library and file name as parameters and go from there. I've thought about using a program described file with 1 really big field and going that route, but for no real particular reason I decided to try using IFS files first. Ultimately what I want to do is come up with a better solution for electronic report distribution than what I currently have. Griz
