Judging by a lot of the programs I've done maintenance on, good program design wasn't a high priority item. Whenever I've had the time I've broken down big subroutines into little ones out of spite. <g> BTW, I think in business programming (from the management/end user point of view) the first criterion is usually does it work? The second is how fast can you write it? Good program design isn't even a nice to have. If you need to take longer to design a good program than to slap something together that will work.....Of course you run into problems if the program needs to be extended or changed to reflect changes in business rules but... One thing I've observed is that a lot of programmers don't care much about programming per se. I know a couple of people who enjoy talking about language enhancements, program optimization, style, structure, etc. The majority are satisfied with the two criteria above. One of the main reasons I subscribe to this list is that most of the list members are interested in programming. > -----Original Message----- > From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx > [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Holden Tommy > Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 11:29 AM > To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries > Subject: RE: Assembly programmers do it a byte at a time > > > Alan Campin wrote: > > > To use ILE effectively, you need to understand how to > design a program > >. . . > > I say this: > > > > To PROGRAM effectively, you need to understand how to > design a program > >. . . > > Thanks, > Tommy Holden > > > -----Original Message----- > From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx > [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of James H H Lampert > Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 1:21 PM > To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries > Subject: Re: Assembly programmers do it a byte at a time > > > Alan Campin wrote: > > > To use ILE effectively, you need to understand how to > design a program > >. . . > > Perhaps more importantly, you need to know the strengths and > weaknesses of the available languages, so that you're able to > use the mixed-language capability inherent in ILE to advantage. > > What's the use of having an environment designed for > mixed-language *PGMs if you're only using one language, or if > you're not using the best available language for any > particular part of the problem you're attempting to solve? > > -- > JHHL > -- > This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) > mailing list > To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx > To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, > visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l > or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx > Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives > at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l. > > > -- > This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) > mailing list > To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx > To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, > visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l > or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx > Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives > at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l. > > ***************************** NOTICE: All e-mail sent to or from this e-mail address will be received or otherwise recorded by The Sharper Image corporate e-mail system and is subject to archival, monitoring, and review by and/or disclosure to Sharper Image security and other management.
