I think you are looking for the Java POI classes. I believe there was an 
article done by iSeries Network some time back. 

If you're open to commercial options, our RPG2SQL Integrator software can 
be used to read and write data directly to MS Excel with formatting from 
any RPG program.

What I am looking for is a solution that will enable me to create report 
headings and column formating in a spreadsheet from an AS/400 file.
I saw an article a while ago on how to do this with API's, but do not 
remember where.
