The point is to update the file.  An array may be helpful for reads.
But for update, even if you work on arrays, you would have to write them
back to the file and that will involve the I/O anyway.  The suggestion
to chain the rrn will be apt in which case, you can avoid reading
through the file but you should know the RRN.  I am not certain why you
would not like to create a view/logical/opnqryf which will enable you to
use an access path. This might be more efficient for you.

Just a thought.  Do have the relative record number of the record you
require?  Or could you arrange to store it from a previous process?  If
you known the RRN you can CHAIN straight to the record required without
using any indexes.  I have to say you don't do this kind of thing very
often though - you'd need quite a good reason not to create a logical
file...
