I'm facing a similar situation. I will soon be training a new programmer who is 21 years old. She has previously only worked in C++ and has no knowledge of RPG. There are books that will teach RPG from the ground up, but there's not much else. My plan is to give her the books, and try to find simple jobs -- actual work -- that fits each chapter to help her understand how it all fits into the "real world." Of course, I'll probably also spend some time just explaining things myself, since there aren't any really good classes for beginners. Last time I sent a programmer to the local technical college, they taught him RPG II and didn't even get as far as display files before the semester was over. I can teach more than that in a week! Unfortunately, I have other responsibilities, and can't be a 40hr/week teacher!
