I don't think REPLACE does a "find/replace" it only does the replace
portion. I use the CleanNum() routine out of the RPG xTools, which does a
very nice job of it, but if you don't have the xTools, you're going to have
to do something. It is unfortunate that something like that couldn't be
changed by IBM and PTF'd.

That may fail too, you might try this:

PackedX = %int('0' + %TrimL(StringA))

Because, I believe '   0123' is value, but '0   123' is not.
Can't check it however at the moment.

idea.  Why not just pre-pend a zero at the beginning of the field

converted?  For example, 

 

PackedX = %Int( '0' + StringA )

 

A leading zero will never change the value of a number, and if StringA
is
all blanks, then zero you shall receive.
