Peter,

Try this. The first is a physical file with a timestamp field and the second
is a logical with a date field defined and used as the key. The gotcha is that
the date value in the logical must be defined as input only.

     A R TIMESTMP
     A NOTE 12S 0
     A DATETIME Z

     A R TIMESTMP PFILE(TIMESTMP)
     A DATETIME L I
      *
     A K DATETIME

HTH,

Rick

Rick,

OK, I'll bite your bait.

How do you create a field in an LF that's the date portion of a timestamp
field in the PF? I had already thought of that also, but I couldn't find
any keyword to do that. And simply doing a RENAME() with datatype 'L' is
not allowed.

And you were right about iSeries Nav: it gave me the exact same info as
debug.

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

You might try a DDS logical with the date portion of the timestamp defined
as a separate field.

Another option is to use the SQL analyzer in Ops Navigator to analyze your
statement. If you have used debug I don't think this will give any
different information.

Subject: Improve SQLRPGLE performance

Hi group,

I made an inquiry SQLRPGLE program where I have to do a count of records
in a file, whereby one of the group-by fields is the date portion of a
timestamp field. The data is presented in a panelgroup application.

The performance, when running in production over a 600.000-record file, is

very VERY bad.

When I debug the program, it says that arrival sequence is used to build
the access path.

Is there a way to improve the performance, such as by creating an index
that has only the date portion of the timestamp field?

Thanks in advance.
