If SQLSTT <> '00000' take the last four numbers of SQLCOD and prefix it with
'SQL'. This gives you the actual SQL error message and can be displayed using
DSPMSGD SQLxxxx MSGF(QSQLMSG).

Subject: Re: dynamic SQL in RPG

Two suggestions:
1) In debug, look at sqlstatement to make certain there is a properly formed
statement. I catch a lot of my oopsies this way.
2) Check the value of SQLSTT after the PREPARE FROM:

C/EXEC SQL
C+ PREPARE S1 FROM :sqlstatement
C/END-EXEC

if sqlstt <> '00000'
// uh-oh...

There is an example of dynamic SQL in the FAQ at http://faq.midrange.com
Search for 'indirect'
