Jon,

Did you see my post with file name coming in as field from file. Can I
loop like I showed? Using the one F Spec. for all files and then use
actual file nameS on reads chains etc.

Maybe I did not explain myself clearly but as far as QCMDEXC string build
with variable from file I said I knew that.
Just trying to do the same with OPEN.

After reading manual and posts it looks to me that it can be a variable
from a file using EXTFILE but it is a one to one. Meaning once I move in
variable in to File and
OPEN File that's it and I can't keep repeating with same F Spec and
different variables.

Is that truth.

Thanks
Bill Hopkins

As has been pointed out earlier you can do what you want with QCMDEXC or
system, but since you asked the question......

The answer is "Yes" for V5R1 and later. V5R1 introduced the F-spec
keyword
EXTFILE. This allows for a literal file name to be used or for a variable
to be used to supply the file name. There is also a matching EXTMBR
keyword. As long as the variable is set _before_ opening the file this
works just fine. The example below demonstrates passing the file name in
as
a parm and also using USROPN.

     FFile2 IF F 10 DISK EXTFILE(FileName2)

     FPrinter IF F 10 DISK EXTFILE(PrtName) USROPN

     D PrtName S 21A
     D FileName2 S 21A
     D Testing S N

     C *ENTRY PLIST
     C PARM FileName2
     C PARM Testing

      * Use test library print file when testing
     C IF Not Testing
     C EVAL PrtName = 'PRODLIB/PRTFILE'
     C ELSE
     C EVAL PrtName = 'TESTLIB/PRTFILE'
     C ENDIF

     C OPEN Printer
