2) If they did do it, then someone else on the list would be complaining
about the lack of fixed format examples. You must have already seen the
postings from people who have said they will never adopt /free. There have
also been complaints on the list when Hans or others post a /free solution
to a problem.

So do you want to say "tough luck" to the shop that is trying to make use of
the new stuff or "tough luck" to the shop that is stuck using the old stuff
and may not need the new stuff?

Lowest common denominator stuff clouds progress, IMO. If a company wants to
stick with RPGIII or fixed format for the rest of their lives let them, but
don't let that hold back the companies that need RPG to get into this
centuries programming model(s).

Just my opinion,

Subject: Adoption of new RPG techniques

 >> Why would the documentation be encouraging fixed format when it
introduces /Free in the same exact document. Could this be one of the
reasons programmers don't jump onto the bandwagon as fast as IBM would like?

Two reasons I can think of:

1) It would be very expensive to rework all examples - remember they have to
be translated into goodness knows how many languages

2) If they did do it, then someone else on the list would be complaining
about the lack of fixed format examples. You must have already seen the
postings from people who have said they will never adopt /free. There have
also been complaints on the list when Hans or others post a /free solution
to a problem.

Does it impact the speed of adoption ? I doubt it very much. RPG IV has
been out for 10 years and still shops code in RPG400 (yuck) - how much
slower could it get?
