I would go along with Aaron on this. Yes the corporate help desk would
probably install it, but the cost is still productivity. If a department is
going to mandate WDSc, then they can upgrade the PCs to be able to
affectively use it. 2+ GHz PCs with 1 GB of Ram.

Somebody has to install the memory, surely the programmer's themselves don't
maintain their own desktop systems at the office... perhaps they do, but
normally you have someone who does that kind of thing and they get paid, and
get benefits etc. So I think $500 is conservative for 20+ systems.

Why would you pay somebody to install your memory. . .  If you know how to
write RPG programs you should have no problem learning how to install memory
:-)

If you have a shop of 25 programmers I would have to say that $3000 won't do
too much to your budget given the payback in PC performance you are going to
get and programmer productivity.  If you have a bad machine count up the
time it takes you to wait for things to get done or reboot when it crashes.
That is how I justify new PC's to management.  It isn't so hard to buy me a
new PC when I spend up to 30 minutes a day waiting for my PC to do stuff (of
course WDSc 5.0 didn't help this out at all :-)

IMO, without a doubt, add more memory to PC's.  Pretty much anything that is
at those conferences can be found online (these forums are a good example).
Conferences are better suited to someone getting into something very early
on - then they provide a wealth of knowledge.


Just my opinion on the third point.

$30 to $40 isn't strickly accurate--perhaps for 256 Meg you can get it at
$59 or so (plus or minus $10). But a company with say 25 developers would be
about $2500 + the labor to install it, figure what, another $500... so
that's a $3000 expense.  If you could send someone to COMMON or RPG World
would you do that or add the extra memory to the PC's?

Just for example, I check how much memory Eclipse (WDSc) is using every once
in a while and it pretty much stays at the 175 -200MB range almost all the
time.  So you can see why you would want at _least_ 512MB (that is what I
have and I want to upgrade).  Memory is so stinkin cheap now adays that it
shouldn't be a problem.  Just watch for deals at your local Best Buy and you
can pick up 512MB of RAM for $30-$40.
