Hi Steve, It is possible to use data queues with display files to do the bit about having a long running function allow a command key press to display some sort of status. Attach a data queue to the display file and have the program read the data queue with no delay. If it gets a data queue entry, a function key was pressed and it can display the status, otherwise, just keeps on doing its primary task.
