Hans,

Probably would be better to use a varchar for the intermediate and then 
move that to your subfile field.  Avoids the performance hit of %trim.

As far as one big field and then breaking it down into 55 character 
chunks, that might work except he may not want to break an element into 
two parts.  Granted, you could work around it but then your into the "6 of 
one, half a dozen of another" argument.
