Sure, Java can talk to non-iSeries data sources (MySQL, Oracle, SQLServer, etc.) >"that guy on the commuter train" was the target customer for >Code/400 and IBM came darn close. True. However, some of the arguments I've see against newer technologies on the iSeries have been (validly) that there isn't a play machine to work on. When you're at work your expected to work and with the rare exception of a couple of people (Andrew <G>) most of us don't have iSerieses in our basement. In the case of Java you can create a _complete_ and _working_ application without an iSeries and still apply that knowledge (and actual code) to your iSeries. -Walden PS. (was Using OO concepts in RPG) You can do that with java without being connected to the data? Actually, according to Jon Paris, "that guy on the commuter train" was the target customer for Code/400 and IBM came darn close. You can verify code, have the on-line manuals, have all of the source, and do everything but run against the actual data. Jon Paris has a better explanation though. I believe you can even synch up in the morning when you get back to the office and get all your overnight changes incorporated easily and quickly, with the assurance that everything will compile. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 12:50:07 PM To: 'RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries' Subject: RE: RPG and Web.. Granted it's been a while since I looked @ Code/400, but I can write, debug and RUN RPG apps inside Code/400 w/o a connection to an iSeries? I'm talking fully functional, web pages, business logic, database access, etc.? >...on the web that will provide an account on the cheap. Fair, but cheap isn't free, and I need to be online to access it. I see a number of notebooks on the train -- granted not everyone has NYC's commuter rail system, but many do. -Walden _______________________________________________ This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
