Yes, I think HPT could fit the bill.  But maybe new DDS keywords would
help, too.  Like TOTALPAGES.  If HPT can be changed to support postscript
then great.  InfoPrint server you can do PDF, but is it built into HPT if
you have it?  IOW, is there a new option to HPT that outputs pdf?  This
would be best, I think.
