I guarantee you that shops that use C/C++ or Java have standards. <g>  e.g.
Where do you put the curly braces?  What's the proper way to indent?

I think the free form question is partly a matter of taste.  Most shops
still have some RPGII code around that's darned near incomprehensible to
people who came up on RPGIII.  I learned free form languages before I
learned RPG and it took me about two hours of free form coding to decide
never to go back. I felt like I had gone home at last.  I can see that
people who learned columnar RPG first might want to stick with what they
think is natural.  

As to better, I'm not sure.  It's better for me because it fits the way I
was first taught to program.  Native English speakers have a hard time
learning inflected languages or languages where the verb comes at the end of
the sentence.  People who grew up speaking Russian find English peculiar.
